    Story

I work for the Scottish ambulance service as one of the paramedics on the Isle of Islay and also cover the Isle of Jura. The aim of this challenge is to raise funds for public access defibrillators to be placed at Port Askaig, Port Ellen, Port Mor at Port Charlotte & Bowmore as well as equipping the 2 police vehicles with a unit each.

As there is only one ambulance on shift at any given time which could be tied up at another incident as well as working on-call from home at night, this can result in a delay in getting to a casualty. To give a cardiac arrest victim the best chance of survival there needs to be a defibrillator on scene quickly with good quality CPR being carried out.

If we manage to reach our target this will allow us to put in the defibrillators into the community which will be mapped by the ambulance service, which means regardless of who calls they can be directed to the nearest unit while the ambulance is being dispatched to scene. If we can purchase 1 or 2 of the new QCPR manikins which would be good for training as these manikins display how well your CPR is. We will deliver free training for the public on a regular basis.

The second attempt at this circumnavigation took place on Staurday 7th July, we left Bowmore at 02:30 and finished the following morning just before Lagan Point at 05:00. A total of 142km and 27 hours paddling. I was so fatigued it would have been dangerous to have continued despite only 5 miles to go. Thank you all for your support.
