    Story

July 22 became fatal to our family. We were having fun near a lake in Anykščiai, Lithuania were my husband landed on a special landing track in to the water. A few landings were successful, but one not so... I saw him floating .Luckily, his brother was standing nearby and quickly took him out of water to the shore. My husband was conscious and asked not to move him as his neck was very painful and he didn’t feel whole of his body. It became clear that his spine was broken. He was taken by ambulance to the emergency department in Anykščiai, then transported to Kaunas and had surgery. Two weeks at reanimation room we were fighting for his life...And we won this battle!!! But now a new fight for our destiny has started. 5th, 6th and 7th spine vertebraes were broken and the spinal cord was strongly demaged during accident. The predictions are gloomy: he will never walk, he will not control his hands fingers, also his pelvic organs are impaired. My husband is at rehab for month already. Our first goal is to sit in a wheelchair. After one month in rehab he is able to sit in wheelchair about for the half an hour and spends the rest of time lying down in bed. It will take a lot of time for a body to re-adapt to the sitting position. He needs to strengthen his neck and other muscles so he could get from bed into the wheelchair by himself. He is doing his best to train his body and special muscle building procedures are being used for this purpose in rehab. Certain procedures for muscle building and electrostimulation are performed. The main intention of rehabilitation is to teach disabled people to live under new, changed conditions of their lives. Government compensates 100 days rehabilitation after such big injuries.Unfortunately, this is too short period to strengthen body, improve mobility and learn self-sufficiency. It may take a few years.....However, we see that rehab is extremely important. Even though predictions are sad, we do not lose our hope! We believe in miracles and my husband will work hard and will be waiting for such miracle to happen. He was always determined, strong and patient, therefore now he's doing all he can, patiently working very hard and not losing hope. After compensated 100 days in rehab, every further day there will cost 78€/day or more than 2300€/month. It is a very huge amount for us, which we cannot afford to pay. The main income of our family was my husband's earnings and I'm on maternity leave now, our daughter is 2 years old. We will be very grateful to those who can support our family and help my husband stay in rehab for as long as possible. We really need our beloved husband and dad to come back home at least stronger.
