My name is Jacob Callicott, I’m 16 years old, and I’m a student of Backwell School Sixth Form. I started my A-levels in September meanwhile I will also be taking part in a World Challenge expedition. World Challenge is an eye-opening trip which gives young people the opportunity to volunteer their time to help developing communities abroad.

For our expedition, we will be travelling out to Indonesia during July 2018. We will be travelling through Java, Sumatra and Bali over the course of 4 weeks. Whilst out there we will be volunteering in local communities. For example, for one week we will be volunteering in a jungle school helping with construction, English lessons and the general day to day running of the school.

Another week will be spent helping to regenerate land which has been affected by deforestation. Deforestation is a massive problem as the production of palm oil means that vast amounts of land are being used to grow the crop used to produce palm oil.

Planning is a key part of ensuring a successful expedition. Our group have met up and have now come to a decision on our itinerary which is stage-1. Stage-2 is fundraising the money for the trip.
