    Story

As many people know we had little girl on tuesday 28th june 2016. Lola was born at 32 weeks for unknown reasons, 20 minutes after she was born she suffererd neonatal seizures, they did’nt stop and could’nt be controlled for 4 hrs, drs finally managed to stop them with alot of morphine and sedatives which put her in a coma. But due to the amount of oxygen starvation she was transferred to william harvey ashford for brain cooling which basically stops further damage happening to the brain.

The next day we were sat down and told the next few days are crucial and she may not survive, we were also told if she did survive she would’nt be able to do anything and also what quality of life would our other children have, to which my reply was they‘d have a sister whether shes normal or not!! So we were asked to turn her machine off less than 24 hrs after she was born which we was not ready for. The following day there was no change and also no brain activity.

On the friday we organised a small baptism and the boys came to finally meet their sister, for them to have never been in that situation they were so good. We made a plan that if there was still no change over the weekend we would turn her ventilater off, but that afternoon she had other plans ☺️ a nurse came into my room and told us she was breathing on her own but still had oxygen support, we literally ran down the corridor to see her, it was so lovely to see her without the huge ventilater in her mouth and her chest was now moving slowly. It was then that things changed they started to listen to us and ask me how i wanted to feed her although we then found out she could’nt swallow so was then tube fed, because lola couldnt swallow they couldnt feed her into her stomach because of reflux and vomits it would aspirate into her lungs so they passed the tube further into her lower intestines. which is why when she came home everytime she pulled it out we had to go back for an xray to make sure it was far enough down.

Over the next few days she started to move, open her eyes and even cry a little which then made me cry 😂

I had to leave her and come back home which was an hr away which was so hard. she was there a week then when she was stable she was moved back to pembury hospital where she stayed for another 5 1/2 months.

lola has had 2 mri‘s which showed damage to both sides of the brain, Up untill the age of 2 the brain can rewire itself around bad parts so there’s still hope although drs look at her compared to her scans and are amazed.

we‘ve been told to expect delays in development and growth but there just small things compared to the things she‘s overcome since coming home in nov 2016 she is so amazing and strong willed, she is always so happy and everything she does is in her own time which is absoloutly fine because most of it is things we were told she‘d never do.

The reason i am doing a giving page is because as lola cannot swallow, we have to suction her secretions roughly 30-50 times a day this is to try and stop it going onto her lungs sometimes it does which is why she was recently in hospital with a collapsed lung. She also has 2 medicines that dry her saliva up but its natural for the body to then make more so its a vicious circle, with also being a baby, teething can cause even more dribble.

We do have a suction machine but it sounds like we’re starting up a tractor everytime we use it, the machine we are looking at is a silent suction machine it is also smaller and less heavier, it will make school runs and days out alot easier as i already have a feeding pump, oxygen, a sats monitor which may i add says “bedside” on it so its not portable but thats all the nhs give out. Im not moaning just giving you an idea on size. Then there’s her ordinary changing bag.

Now lola is more mobile we have to suction more often, although we dont feel embarrased doing it as in a way its saving her life, it does cause unnecessary attention as people are wondering what it is and what we are doing whether its in the school playground or in the middle of a shop, i would’nt mind if people ask but they do just stare. Its never certain times so we cant work around it, but because of the noise we can’t be discreet if it had no noise you would‘nt even realise i was using it. I hate having to sit near a door when i go to a school play or be near the toilet in the drs surgery, its not that im embarrased its more having people look and see thick horrible secretions come out her nose or throat which can then make her sick so i have to catch that with the suction shes so used to it she does’nt even cry but it must be horrible for others to see. As lola is getting older i want things to get easier for her. If i do use it in the night it is the noise that wakes her and the rest of the house up. I know this as when lola is in hospital they have a built in one and she does’nt even murmour when i use it in the night there, she just sleeps through it

Hopefully lola will continue to progress and maybe one day we’ll be in 9 month clothes 🤣

Thankyou for reading our lola 🐻‘s story and thankyou so much to everyone that supports us
