Story

Hello Friends,  On the 2nd of July, I am travelling to Fiji with the charity Think Pacific Foundation (1162190). I will be undertaking a month’s long youth and sports development project to assist children in the rural Fiji village Momi. For those of you who know me will know this is a massive step outside my comfort zone and a challenge I can't wait to embrace!

Although Fiji is a safe and wonderful country, children in Fiji grow up in a world of limited education, basic knowledge and a severe lack of opportunity. In Fiji over 75% of families live below the poverty line and less than 5% of children in rural areas have access to education. My time on the island will be spent in schools and kindergartens, helping the children develop their math’s and English skills through one to one tuition as well as coaching a variety of sports and organising and leading extracurricular events. I want to put my skills in teaching, passion for education and sporting ability to good use to help make a positive change while over there.

I will experience hard-hitting and challenging conditions as I volunteer to deliver a government backed programme to enthuse children living in hardship. During our stay, we will be staying with host families where I will be thrown into extremely basic conditions with cold bucket showers, basic toilets and minimum electricity, nothing I will have ever experienced before.

To achieve my goal of volunteering and supporting the project in Fiji, I am aiming to raise a minimum of £500 towards the charity. Over one third of this funding will be used directly to support the children in Fiji by supplying resources, helping to re-build and equip schools and supporting long term educational initiatives for children and local teachers.

Personally, I believe this project is going to grow me as a person as I am pushed outside my comfort zone and thrown into a completely new culture.  The skills I learn while teaching will be very valuable to my later aspirations to work in education.  This is a one in a lifetime experience and I can’t wait to relish the opportunity I have been given to make a positive difference. I am going to whole heartedly throw everything at this opportunity and aim to make the biggest difference I can while over there. I can't wait to immerse myself into the local culture, share my knowledge and challenge myself in new ways.

Any donations or support no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all,

Jade xxx
