Story
On the 100th Anniversaries of World War 1, we need your help in helping a Grandson to travel & pay his respects to his Grandfather, on 26th February 2018 who died fighting fires in the engine room of a British Red Cross Hospital Ship.
His Majesty's Hospital Ship 'Glenart Castle', was torpedoed by the German U-boat UC-65 on Tuesday 26th February 1918 at 04.00 hrs, 20 miles off Hartland Point, North Devon.
A century later, your donation will pay for a return train ticket from Southampton to Barnstaple, Devon to guarantee the families of those who fought for freedom and humanity will still be remembered down the generations.
So far, we have been kindly supported in particular by:
the lovely Elaine of Hartland Peninsula Association who spread the word of our email enquiries;
Tim of Pattard Holiday Cottages who has generously offered the Grandson free accommodation.
Return Train Ticket to Devon from Southampton £64.60.
Taxi from Barnstaple to Hartland £57.50 + reverse journey £57.50 Total = £115.00 Taxi from Hartland to Hartland Point £8.50 + reverse £8.50 = £17.00
RBL Poppy Wreath £18.50
Please check to reassure yourselves that this amount is correct by thetrainline.com, yourtaximeter.com, britishlegion.org.uk
It took 8 minutes for the 'Glenart Castle' to sink in rough seas.
A total of 162 people were killed, including the Grandfather, William Doe .
He was a married man of 29, born in Lymington, living in the New Forest, Hampshire; who signed up immediately on the outbreak of war in 1914.
Casualties -
Captain Bernard Burt, Master of the ship.
Miss Kate Beaufoy, Matron of the ship
8 Nurses of the QAIMNS
7 Officers of the RAMC
47 Medical Orderlies of the RAMC
99 Patients - Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen
32 survivors were reported. Initial survivors in the few lifeboats were found shot dead still wearing their lifejackets.
Thank you very much for your time in reading our hopeful intentions.

6 years agoWe're off to a fine start with our first generous donation of £50.00 followed shortly with £10.00 - this very nearly covers the return train fare from Southampton to Barnstaple in north Devon - the nearest railway station to the Hartland Peninsula. This is the closest point to the WW1 torpedoed wreck of the Hospital Ship 'Glenart Castle', where the Memorial Stone is & Service will be. We would like to be able to raise more funds to get Mr Allen from Barnstaple Station to the remote Hartland Peninsula, via a mixture of bus & taxi. Thank You!
