    Story

Tessa's fight with cancer began in the summer of 2014 when, after finding a lump, she was sent for a biopsy and a scan and was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer .

In August 2014, Tessa started 8 rounds of chemotherapy but, after only 7 rounds, it was found that the tumours had stopped responding to the treatment and the only option was surgery.

In March 2015, Tessa had one breast removed together with her lymph nodes (of which, 15 of the 16, were found to be cancerous) and, whilst she was officially "in remission", Tessa had to continue with radiotherapy treatment in the form of pills and injections.

Things were looking positive - until - in March 2016, Tessa found another lump near to the scar she was left with after the removal of her breast. She was immediately sent for a biopsy and a scan and was told that the cancer had returned. This time it was stage 3 and was a faster-growing cancer than previously. Back to chemotherapy but, after only 1 round, it was found that the lump had not responded and, in fact, had grown and so, in July 2016, Tessa underwent surgery to remove her other breast. Again, cancer-free, Tessa continued on the pills.

In February 2017, however, only 7 months after her second operation, Tessa discovered yet another lump - this time, in her neck. She was sent once more for a biopsy and was told that the cancer had returned - again a stage 3 type.

A scan, however, showed that tumours had developed in other areas of her body - too numerous to remove - and so the cancer was now categorised as "secondary" and "terminal".

Tessa's world crashed down around her - to be told that she was now incurable - that all they could try to do was to slow down the process - that she would have to, at some point way too soon, say "goodbye" to her Husband and her two teenage Sons - was all too much and, for a while, she fell apart.

After a week , Tessa realised she had 2 options - give up - or fight - and, for the sake of her boys, she decided to FIGHT.

Unfortunately, despite her resolve, the pills she was given to try and stop/shrink the cancer did not work and the cancer continued to grow. Towards the end of 2017 Tessa started to spend more time in hospital and, in January 2018, was given the devastating news by her Consultant that her body was starting to struggle and she was given just 2 weeks to live. It was at that point that her Husband gave up his job as a truck driver and chose to dedicate himself to be by her side. Tessa wanted to come home for her last days and so left Musgrove Park Hospital for the last time.

That was 5 weeks' ago now - Tessa has managed to celebrate her 37th birthday - and Valentine's Day - and, whilst she is now in St Margaret's Hospice, she continues to laugh and smile wherever she can. Her Family are still by her side and stay over at the Hospice most nights.

Tessa has suffered so much yet, through it all, she did her utmost to continue with her work at the local secondary school as, she once told me, she "likes to keep busy".

She is a great friend to all that know her and continues to offer HER support to anyone that she feels is in need. I defy you to find one person who has anything negative to say about her.

Whilst this dreadful illness has taken it's toll on the family emotionally, it has also done so financially - the cost of travelling to/from the hospital/hospice; the (rather expensive) cost of parking and, now, a total loss of earnings since Mike gave up his job to care for his Wife - and that is where we come in as we try to remove some of the burden placed on the family, leaving them free to concentrate on simply being together whilst time still allows.

Never will you ever meet a kinder person than Tessa - and never will you ever see a family surrender themselves fully to help each other as this family has done. They are a wonderful family and, despite all their heartache they continue to stay strong for each other and kind to others and it is people like this that make our world a better place and that is what makes this story so dreadfully, dreadfully sad.

WE DID IT !!!!! And all thanks to a last minute "anonymous" donation of a whopping £320, which I have subsequently found out is from one Macaulay Edwards !!!!! Macaulay wanted to see "his Mum's" fund reach target and so he donated the proceeds from his sale of some bike parts. At a time when he is dealing with his own grief, he still finds it within his heart to think of others .... just like Tessa did. Macaulay - your Mum would be SO very, very proud of you

I met Tessa 8 years ago now- when our lads played together for a local football team. Many an hour have we stood cheering on the boys - in the sun & the rain, in the wind & the snow - and, through it all, the one thing that I will always remember is the laughs that we shared.
