Story
Maisie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in Feb 14 aged 7. T1D is an autoimmune disease where the cells in the pancreas stop producing insulin. It has not got anything to do with diet, lifestyle or 'eating too many sweets'. There is no cure. For the first year Maisie had to be injected at least 4 times a day and did a minimum of 6 finger prick blood tests each day, not to mention the numerous hypos and hypers and interrupted nights sleep. Maisie was selected for a trial on insulin pump therapy which would replace the daily injections and she has been using her pump ever since. More recently a new device called a Freestyle libre sensor has been approved for use in children, which replaces the need for finger prick blood tests and we were lucky enough to be provided with a starter pack from our fantastic team at the QA to try. It is a small device that is inserted at the top of Maisie's arm that comes with a small hand held scanner and a quick scan tells us what her blood sugars are doing. It even works under her coat and quickly lets us know if her blood sugars are dropping or rising quickly. To say it has made a difference to Maisie's quality of life in the short space of time we have used it is an understatement. Maisie's wee fingers are no longer sore all the time. She no longer feels that people are looking at her in restaurants etc. When we have to check her in the night it doesn't wake her. Unfortunately it is not available on the NHS and we have to self fund. One sensor lasts 14 days and they are just under £60 each. I know to some people that's not a lot but to us it's quite a bit. This is the hard bit and where we are asking for your help. It's not something we are doing lightly as we don't like asking for money, but many friends have suggested that they would be happy to help and we should fundraise, so if you could spare a few pounds to help Maisie we would be so grateful. A 4 pack which would last up to 56 is just over £230. Thanks for your support.
