Story
I want to raise awareness about Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) and funds for our local service. We are planning a race night in November but I have been thinking about other ways to raise funds.
My daughter Alice, was diagnosed with Crohns in 2013. She had just started Warwick University. Typical symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhoea, stomach ache and then blood loss led to the diagnosis. By the end of summer, she had spent 3 weeks in hospital and had to undergo 2 emergency surgeries. Alice had unsuccessful surgery to drain a perianal abscess and the insertion of of a seton (a looped stitch that goes from the abscess to the skin and stays in place to allow drainage). The wound had to be left open to heal from the inside out (in between her buttocks) and Alice then had to have an ileostomy. Alice returned to university after the summer holidays despite advice from her surgeon to take a year out. She had a stoma to cope with and still had a wound that at one point you could fit your fist inside. Alice needed daily dressings and the wound eventually healed by Christmas. Alice was and still is positive. Alice even set up a blog aimed at supporting young people with similar problems. Alice coped admirably and I am sure that I would have not had the strength that Alice demonstrated at the time.
By no means is it comparable, but I have decided to wear a colostomy bag for a week just to have a taste of the difficulties involved. During the week, I will fill it with water and obviously need to change it as you would a stoma. I work full time as well as being a member of a gym where I swim, work out, attend yoga and pilates as well as use the jacuzzi.
I start my challenge on Monday 2nd October, 2017. Please follow my journey and donate.

7 years agoMy week is over. I have shared with you some of the issues. Now I need to share with you the positives. Alice needed surgery to save her life. She was loosing poo from a wound near her bottom, she was extremely poorly. There was no alternative. For many, this is the reality of the situation. Many, live through years of treatments that have not worked and they suffer so choosing to have a stoma allows them to have quality again and often, with less medication. Raising awareness as much as money has been my aim. I hope I have succeeded in both.

I am a normal working mum with 2 beautiful girls. In 2013, Alice was 18 when she became very poorly very quickly. Alice was diagnosed with Chrohn's Disease. Our world fell apart. Alice is now well thanks to the expertise from St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
