    Story

Just Books is 40 this year and have recently moved out of our Berry Street premises and are looking for a new home.

We are hoping to find an accessible centre to house our library, provide reading and meeting space, hold educational, social and political events and provide a base for truly progressive, working-class, feminist, anti-racist, anti-sectarian and anarchist campaigning. All this as part of keeping Ireland's longest functioning, anarchist run, radical bookshop going for at least another 40 years.

Opened, by anarchists, in Winetavern Street in 1978, Just Books then, as now, was and is more than just a bookshop. “Just Books opened in the early summer of 1978… a thousand ideas, but two primary aims – to make radical literature available to everyone in Belfast and beyond, and to run the shop on a collective basis, without a boss”.

We continued to meet those aims in our premises in Berry Street, where we were based for the past two years. While there we started making our own t-shirts and badges, vastly expanded our library, hosted a wide range of book launches, film nights, discussions, talks, campaign meetings, social events and organised the 9th and 10th Belfast Anarchist Bookfairs. For our 40th year we want to build on all of this.

To do so we need to secure funding to move to a new, accessible, location in Belfast – bringing radical ideas and action to more and more people in the process.

This crowd-funder is just part of a major fundraising campaign that will see events celebrating 40 years of Just Books across the city and beyond. So, dig deep and be part of keeping this essential part of radical Belfast going for another 40 years.

At the £1,250 mark we may have identified suitable premises for at least some of the work we want to do with a new centre. To make this a reality we need to make a push to get us to the £3000 mark by the end of the month! With your ongoing support we can achieve this.
