I have signed myself to do a skydive to try and raise funds for the Queens centre at CHH.
I would like to help to raise enough money to have WIFI and phone signal as currently signal is very poor and there is no internet access for patients or friends/relatives.
I lost my mum to lung cancer last year and I spent a lot of time in and out of the queens centre attending hospital appointments, chemotherapy sessions and then eventually a few weeks stay on ward 31. I particularly found it hardest at the end not being able to keep in contact with my mum because of the lack of signal. My mum was unable to mobilise by herself so the only time she could contact myself was to go outside which would have to be when then nursing staff where not busy and so could push her in a wheelchair outside (as a NHS worker myself and a student nurse I know how difficult that was because we are always so busy) My mum was also very independent and didn't like to ask for help but not having contact with the outside world distressed her at times as it did me. I live approx. 45minutes away from CHH and to leave my mum there on her own knowing I didn't have contact with her upset me a lot, especially when her health detoriated I didn't want to leave her side but if id have known she could call me if she needed to it would've made it eaiser. My mum was part of a big volunteer group for the city of culture and so used social media a lot to keep up to date with events and keep in touch with people/her friends.
