Weʼve raised £2,300 to help fund a bereavement suite in Brighton (at the Royal Sussex County Hospital)

    Brighton, United Kingdom
Funded on Monday, 3rd December 2018

    Story

Our beautiful baby girl Jessica Louise Carling was born sleeping on 23.10.17, weighing 5lb5. I was 33 weeks and 4 days pregnant at the time. Just a week before we had seen Jessica smiling at us on a 4D scan, she was growing so well and everything looked perfect. We don't know why her little heart stopped beating and we may never know.

David and I spent a week in a newly opened bereavement suite in Haywards Heath. We stayed there for 3 days continously while I was induced and in labour. Then we came back to the suite to visit Jessica, read her bedtime stories and say our final goodbyes. We so wish we could have brought her home alive, watched her grow and enjoyed witnessing her little personality develop. However, sadly that was not meant to be. This was obviously the worst time of our lives. However, the bereavement suite did provide us a lot of comfort. It was our home with Jessica for the short time we did share together. So now we want to help raise the money to open a similar bereavement suite in Brighton in Jessica's memory, in collaboration with a local charity Oscar's Wish Foundation (they funded the room we stayed in, which was opened just days before we discovered that Jessica's little heart had stopped beating). David and I plan to do various fundraising events to help make this happen. However, in the meantime if you wish to donate and help us make this a reality, then we would be very grateful. All of the money will go to Oscar's Wish Foundation.

We are still discussing the logistics of this project with Oscar's Wish and the hospital. So we don't know exactly how much we need to raise yet. We have had written agreement from the hospital that two rooms outside the maternity ward can be transformed into one large bereavement suite. This will be more expensive than the Haywards Heath renovation due to it being a larger suite. So we have put £4000 as a target for now and we will update this page when we are clearer on costs.

Lots of love the Carling family x

We have now raised £14k & there are still some funds pending. The overall total is likely to be about £16k, which is simply amazing & well above our initial target. Abigails Footsteps (the other charity involved in developing the suite) won a competition to pay for the building work too. So we almost have enough money to completely fund the suite now. The start date for the building work is Mon 11th June & it is anticipated to take approx 2-3 weeks. All monies raised will then be used to purchase the furnishings, fittings, equipment etc.
