I am doing the Three peaks challenge on the 29th June to help raise funds for a local family who need to raise £30,000 to fund a downstairs disabled access bedroom and bathroom for their 10 year old daughter who has Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL), a condition associated with tumours arising in multiple organs.

Emma was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017. she had to endured a 14 hour operation to partially remove the tumour. Emma quickly recovered from this operation, but unfortunately 6 months later the tumour started to grow again. Within weeks Emma was really poorly and was back in hospital for another operation. Emma was sedated for 3 days till the decision to operate again was made. This time she had to endure a 18 hour operation to partially remove the tumour. she remain sedated for a further 6 days after the operation. Thankfully the operation was a success.

Unfortunately it soon became apparent that the tumour had caused several other complications. Emma now has to have a tracheostomy, she needs oxygen and is on a ventilator at night and she is unable to swallow and now has to be tube fed.

Emma now needs 24/7 care. Someone has to sit and watch her 24 hours a day. For Emma to receive the care she needs she needs night carers, this care however cannot be supplied until Emma has her own disable access bedroom and bathroom. Emma has 4 siblings and unfortunately this is just impossible for them at the moment, so Emma has had to spend the last 5 months on a hospital bed in their living room. As you can imagine this is not an ideal situation and Emma really needs some privacy and space.

Emma's family have applied for a grant to enable them to build an extension to give Emma the space and privacy she needs, as well as the room to accommodate the carers Emma needs to keep her safe. Unfortunately the grant will not cover all the building costs and Emma's family need to contribute in the region of £30,000. They are trying everything they possibly can to raise these funds.

I have chosen to try and help Emma and her family raise these funds by doing the Three peaks challenge. The three peaks challenge covers 24.5 miles and includes a 1585m ascent. It takes on the three peaks pen-y-Ghent, whernside and ingleborough. the challenge is to complete these 3 peaks in under 12 hours.
