In March 2021 Jodi was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancerous tumour and was in the liver. Jodi spent the first month as an inpatient at the outstanding oncology, haematology ward in The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. During this first month they tried to stabilise his bloods, took many scans, placed his PICC line and liver tube and he fought many infections. Once stabilised, they began the first of 6 rounds of chemotherapy to try to shrink the 8cm tumour.

In August the tumour had shrunk enough for us to travel to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for open surgery to remove the tumour. One week after arriving back in Belfast, they started the first of another 3 rounds of intense chemotherapy.

Fast forward to mid September and we had the best news we could ever have asked for. The pathology results came back that the full tumour was resected leaving NO cancer in that area.

Jodi still has chemotherapy every day administered by mum and dad, along with a weekly visit to hospital to have another chemotherapy drug. This will continue until April 2022.

During Jodi’s cancer treatment, 3 charities have supported our family in ways we will forever be thankful for. Jodi was provided a dry suit to allow him to continue swimming and water based activities. Every week, 2 for Tuesdays Dominos Pizza is ordered for every parent and child on the CHU ward and before Christmas we enjoyed a therapeutic break, for the whole family to relax and enjoy making memories at Daisy lodge in Newcastle. However, these charities support families in many other ways. Paying for much needed support staff in the hospital and play therapists. Gifts to help children smile throughout their gruesome treatment plans and even using funding to build and maintain parts of the cancer ward in The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.
