    Story

    #ThisIsLuke

This is 7 year old Luke.

Luke was a budding 7 year old rugby player, a bundle of joy who even at a young age had embraced life and everyday was a happy day. His whole family was part of the rugby community, with his dad coaching many age grade youngsters and his mum, running a children’s rugby kit recycling stall, so that the young boys and girls, always had the right gear to play and train in.

However, whilst the rest of us were buying and wrapping presents ready for Christmas, the families life was turned upside down. On the 13th Dec 2019 Luke fell ill with Meningococcal Meningitis.

Meningococcal Meningitis is a bacterial disease which if not treated early is a killer. Luke was rushed to hospital and with the fantastic work of our nurses, doctors and specialist care teams Luke was transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Luke’s and his young life was saved, however the disease has taken its toll on his little body. Over the last 28 days Luke has endured many hours of surgery to remove both hands, left at mid forearm and right just below the elbow, he has also lost both legs below the knee. He has proven he is a fighter, however his life and the life of his mum, dad and his 10 year old big brother will never be the same.

Luke and his family will now face many challenges, and this along with many locally hosted fundraising events, is a way to help Luke and his family.

Guys, really sorry that I have not been able to keep everyone updated. It is great news that Luke is now home and settling in well with the family - this said, he still a long way to go and we are so very much appreciative of the continued support Luke and the family are receiving. Please keep plugging away and sharing Luke story far and wide.... It would be great to try and get to the £150,000.00 mark. How good does that sound but to already be at £125K plus is a sum out of this world! Much love to all! The #ThisIsLuke team

Hello everyone - I haven't updated for a while! Its been a busy few weeks with all the different events happening. From local cake sales to karaoke, darts / dominoes knockouts to school disco's - it all going on and every penny raised goes that little further for Luke and the family. Luke is doing well and is staying strong. Just a quick reminder about the big charity rugby match on the 29th Feb - the Luke Mortimer Select XV squad has been named. We cannot wait to see Adam (Luke's Dad) lead the team out onto the field. It will be a great day!

To Luke & his family, we are all thinking of you, Luke is such a brave young man. We had a race night in early March, and the team decided that the proceeds from 1 of the races was going to Luke.

Saw you story in the Craven Herald and feel your little boy deserves help rather than the NHS and Covid charities. I hope he continues to recover, and adapt to the path fate has chosen for him.

There does not have be a connection for this story to touch a nerve but being a fellow amputee, a rugby coach/player coupled with being a family friend, it was a no brainer to support Luke were possible. #ThisIsLuke just giving page is away for all to help Luke in any way we can.
