Story
I’ll do the walking, your money will do the talking……
After more than 28 years, it is time for me to move on from VSO.
However, before I sign off, I want to carry out a symbolic finale to my time with VSO by supporting a cause very much inspired by their work – The Liz Holmes Trust.
Five years ago, I walked to VSO in London from my home is Wales and raised more than £4k for VSO projects. This time I will do the reverse and walk away from VSO, back to my home in Abergavenny.
I hope to raise a similar amount of money again to support a project that has been set up in South Africa and Zimbabwe in the name of a dear colleague – Liz Holmes – who sadly passed away last year from a terminal illness.
Before she passed away, Liz expressed her wish to have hospice facilities established in Southern Africa where for many years she was VSO’s Regional Director. The Liz Holmes Trust was established under the guidance of Bongai Mundeta, VSO’s RHAISA Director and now a group of 8 trustees is headed by Dr Henry Madzorera, former Zimbabwe Minister of Health. The trustees have overseen the establishment of two facilities to date, one in Zimbabwe and the other in Lesotho.
The Liz Holmes Trust isn’t a VSO project as such, but I am grateful for the support VSO have given me in organising my walk and for supporting the cause. I should make it clear that I am raising funds independently for this project and will personally guarantee that every penny will make its way to the trustees.

7 years agoThis am we have topped 1000GBP! + off-line donors. This is fantastic and a big thanks to all. Fantastic also that we're raising funds for the Liz Holmes Hospices that has to date supported over 50 households of patients with terminal illnesses. Over 500 palliative care givers have been trained. The care givers train family members to provide quality caring for their relatives. You and I are helping to reduce anxiety , pain and to allow patients to sleep with some comfort each night. We can do more yet - donation page is now open until June.

7 years agoYesterday's photo was from under the M4 m/way bridge on the Wales coast path from the old bridge at Aust. I've now walked the old bridge twice but'll restrict future crossings to the annual 'Hog the Bridge' motorcycle event on my Bonnie! That day I'd walked from Severn Beach - the walk is a birdwatcher's paradise but for me it was a slog and I needed inspiration to keep me going. My head was down and I was plodding - but I had a target and a cause that I believed in - and I had support from amazing 'JustGivers'! What better more did I need....

7 years agoIt's just over a week since I staggered home on that last day and have I left VSO behind? For sure in terms of employment but certainly not in terms of interest and loyalty. The walk gave me ample time to reflect on the great volunteers and country staff I have worked with over the years, the best being those who have always demonstrably had disadvantaged people as the focus of their work. My walk had such people in mind and the money I am raising will help to relieve the burden of those caring for terminally ill loved ones.

Good luck John. Sounds like a very worthwhile charity to support, and a great way to say goodbye. Enjoy retirement! Thanks for all the support while I was in Oudomxay - loads of great memories!
