Story
Thank you very much for taking the time to visit our page.
Our little 5 month old Nicolas was diagnosed with severe plagiocephaly (also known as the Flat Head Syndrome). However, under current NHS policies this is regarded as a cosmetic issue and so the NHS does not offer any treatment. However, as parents we are concerned that if Nicolas's condition does not get resolved, it may negatively affect his psychological wellbeing. We are worried of the emotional difficulties that he might face throughout childhood and possibly into later life. Our GP has alerted us of the possibility of non-NHS-funded treatment through corrective helmet which costs around £2000. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to pay for the entire treatment ourselves and so we have set up this giving page in the hope that we can collect the outstanding amount via donations and to raise awareness of this condition.
We first noticed a change in Nicolas's head shape at around 1 month of age, it began with a little flattening at the side of his head and we mentioned this to our GP who advised that this would be fine and would correct itself, this did not stop us worrying so we tried everything we could to ensure we took the pressure off the flat spot of his head but it didn’t.
As the weeks went by we then started to notice Nicolas would only try to turn his head to the left hand side during playtime, when he slept and even when held upright.
After much research we found that the UK usually advise that this condition will resolve itself up to the age of 18 months, this is not always the case and there is no funding on the NHS to treat Flat Head Syndrome as it is considered to be a cosmetic issue, however other countries such as the USA, Germany and France recognise this as a medical issue with studies showing amazing results.
As mentioned, we have already started Nicola's treatment, he was fitted with the helmet on the 18/11/2017, we will be posting additional pictures to show how his treatment is developing as he goes along.
Thank you very much for helping our little boy donating or sharing our giving page, we also would like to raise awareness of plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, conditions which are being diagnosed in an increasing number of babies.
