    Story

In May 2017, my wonderful husband, James suffered from severe pneumonia and sepsis and was admitted to hospital. Due to complications because of other medical conditions he deteriorated rapidly. He was admitted to intensive care and at one point we were devastated to be called in to say 'Goodbye' as the doctors believed there was no hope for survival. Miracles do happen and against all the odds he survived. After over a month in intensive care he was moved to a general ward to start his rehabilitation and in September, after nearly 4 months he finally left hospital.

The reason why James had so many complications was due to a drug that he was taking to treat psoriatic arthritis. This drug was Methotrexate. Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune disorder and Methotrexate is used to suppress the immune system. Due to his immune system being suppressed his pneumonia and sepsis was very severe and resulted in an empyema which required a chest drain which was in situ for 7 months. His Methotrexate was stopped immediately and he was given a broad spectrum of antibiotics which he remained on for 4 months. When the Methotrexate was stopped initially his immune system did not appear to recover and the doctors thought he might need a bone marrow transplant. Slowly there was signs of the immune system recovering. Unfortunately for James his immune system went into overdrive and instead of fighting the infection it fought the health portions of the lungs. The doctors told us there was nothing that they could medically do to stop this process and they did not believe this process would stop by itself. The 'miracle' that happened was this process eventually stopping when he was put on a ventilator for humane reasons. He was on the ventilated for nearly a month and had tracheostomy.

Prior to falling ill, he had decided to start his own business. This however meant that we had no sickness benefits and my family was left with no income from him while he was in hospital. He is now unable to work due long term effects of his illness.

I usually work full time but have been signed off since June when his condition deteriorated dramatically. I have been his full time carer since his discharge from hospital. He has had to relearn how to breath, eat, talk and walk. He had also lost about 4 stone in weight. We have been trying for months to get his pension due to ill health, however this can only be paid out if he fulfills the criteria. While waiting for a decision on his pension all of our savings have been used up and debts have built up.

During this period of time I also had to cope with 3 of my children being unwell. Two of them have life long conditions. They required regular visits to the GP and hospital for treatment. I believe their illnesses have partially been aggrevated by the day to day stress we have been living with.

We are now seriously at risk of loosing our home and everything that we have work so hard for. Please can you help urgently to prevent us and our 6 children from becoming homeless.

James has been in hospital since Wednesday this week and has an infection. He is due an operation on Monday where 2 precedures are to be carried out. It's very frustrating having yet another set back. There seems to be no break in our bad luck since May last year.

James is back in hospital with a suspected infection. Hopefully he's in quickly enough that it's easy to treat and he's only in a day or 2. He's having blood tests, xrays and a ct scan today.

James and I have been married for 25 years and had 6 children. Prior to May 2017 James was a fit active man who enjoyed walking and photography. He did suffered from osteoporosis and psoriatic arthritis but these conditions were under control and didn't hold him back.
