Story
Jeremy Woods was a resident tennis coach at Clapham Common for over 40 years. He was a man who dedicated his life to tennis, helping and inspiring hundreds if not thousands of people to take up the game he so loved. He was also a mentor to other coaches looking to learn from the wealth of his knowledge, so that could be passed on, He also authored a number of books on tennis.
He was also a very successful player in his own right. He represented Great Britain throughout the Veteran's teams and was World No. 1 at points during his career. Furthermore he played Bundesliga Tennis in Germany for a number of seasons.
Jeremy had previously has his battles with skin cancer but had been successful. However in late 2018 the demon had returned and he was given only weeks to live. Ever the competitor, Jeremy sought a new pioneering treatment which arrested the disease. Despite the side effects of his treatment, Jeremy continued to coach up until the very end of his life, even though he knew the cancer had returned with a vengeance.
He passed away in a MacMillan hospice on Tuesday 6th August. To commemorate his life's work, we are raising funds for a tree and a bench to placed at the courts. The estimate for this is approximately £850 with any surplus raised going to the MacMillan Cancer Trust.
There will also be a Social Tennis Tournament on Saturday 7th September from 3pm. This will be a doubles based, with the emphasis on Social Play, changing partners every 20 minutes or so. For more information on this and how to enter please email Julian on Julian@juliancousinssports.com

5 years agoHi there, I thought I would let you know where your kind donations were going to. So we raised £1505 which was amazing. Net of Just Giving's charges that comes to £1454.10. The bench has been ordered and pay for and came to a total of £615.50. Jane and I are awaiting the quotations for the tree and then following payment for that, the remaining monies will be split between the hospice that took care of Jeremy and Cancer Research. Many thanks, Julian

Jeremy taught me a huge amount in the short time we spent together and I will be forever grateful for his help and guidance. Hugely sad and a fitting tribute to such a wonderful coach.

Oh Jeremy, I really thought/rather hoped you’d beat it. I’m so sad to discover you didn’t; life isn’t fair. You taught me so much, I’ll always be very grateful. I promise to work on my forehand xX

Jeremy was my first coach. We also had friends in common and we often had interesting discussions at the Clapham courts. He was a permanent fixture on the Clapham courts and he will be sorely missed.
