Story
St Thomas’ Church, Rhyl
Building Improvement Fund Appeal
St. Thomas’ Church is one of the largest church buildings in the diocese. Designed by George Scott, it occupies a central location in the heart of Rhyl town and is the Civic Church. There is a ring of eight bells in the tower, and the church has a very good pipe organ built in 1907 by William Hill which has undergone a scheme of renovation and modernisation. There is a very good musical tradition.
The foundation stone of St. Thomas's church was laid on Whit Monday, 20 May 1861. The nave was opened for worship in 1862. The chancel was added, and opened in July 1867. The church was eventually consecrated in March 1869.
"Among the many objects that attract the stranger's attention on his first visit to Rhyl, the bold outlines of St. Thomas's Church are sure to claim his notice and admiration; standing as it does in the very heart of the town, it can be viewed with advantage from all points. This Church, we need hardly remind most of our readers, has been built almost solely out of the voluntary donations of the inhabitants and the visitors frequenting this delightful watering place."[From The Rhyl Record of 12 March 1869]
Sadly, the fabric of the building is quickly deteriorating; urgent and essential maintenance has seen the funds dwindle rapidly over the past 12 months. We need to urgently generate more income to our Building Improvement Fund. We need toilets, a kitchen, decorating, new heating system. All work will benefit the whole community.
I will be arranging fundraising events such as Coffee Mornings, Table top sales, Raffles, sponsored events, and would I welcome any other suggestions. Any offers of help in this fundraising effort would also be greatly appreciated.
Raffle prizes, cakes for coffee mornings, ‘Good condition’ items to sell, individual fundraising events, and monetary donations via Just Giving are welcomed.
Thanks
