The historic Central Hill Estate was designed by Rosemary Stjernstedt under the architect Ted Hollamby, who famously put people at the heart of his designs. Finished in 1975, the estate – complete with its own nuclear bunker - was intended to preserve the skyline of the fresh air borough, providing fine views into central London as well as outside spaces for its tenants.

After years of neglect by Lambeth Council they are now planning to demolish the estate instead of simply repairing it. To fund this, they will build more flats and houses on the estate that will be sold to raise cash for the council.

The people who live on the estate will lose their current homes, tenants will lose their secure tenancies and leaseholders will be forced out as the new properties will not be affordable. The community will be destroyed. The impact on the local area will also be significant as Lambeth plan to at least double the number of homes on the estate.

There IS an alternative. ASH (Architects for Social Housing) have been working with residents for almost 2 years to draft plans for our estate which would provide additional homes by building on void areas but WITHOUT demolishing a single existing home, WITHOUT destroying our trees and green spaces and WITHOUT uprooting our community.
