Hi, my name is Katie Mounsor, I am 16 years old and a Girl Guide.
In the summer of 2016, I travelled to Romania with 9 other guides and two leaders, to help run a summer school for 5 days for children living in a rural village called Godinesti, outside the city of Bacau.
Many children in the village work whilst they aren't in school- which consists of two classrooms, if they don't have a scholarship to the high school in Bacau, a 50 minute journey away. So in summer school, we give them a week of fun activities and the opportunity to just be children. When I say 'we' I mean the girl guide volunteers and the FSC charity in Romania. They run many summer schools and have an amazing pool of volunteers helping all year round.
I have set up this page because in the summer of 2017, I am going back to the summer school for another week of incredible fun! For me, it is important to go back, because having witnessed the gratitude and joy expressed by the children, it was an enlightening experience for me. I came home humbled and realising just how much I have to be grateful for.
Last year, the trip cost £1350, however this year it is £1500. Before, I raised money through sponsors for climbing Mt. Snowden, holding a disco at my local guide unit and a beetle drive with my local brownies. Whilst I still plan to do many fundraising activities, I would deeply appreciate any donations, to send me back, to see and help the wonderful people I met last year!
