What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Story

I have just returned from the school trip to Tanzania with Kent college (KC) and I am amazed but also shocked by the conditions people in Tanzania (especially students) endure. Poverty and inequality still have massive impacts in the community and in schools with corporal punishment used and a lack of staff. Also, for disabled people in Tanzania getting work is very hard which makes integrating with society even more challenging. However, Kent College are working with organisations in Tanzania to help make the significant steps needed to help these groups of people.

One of the raw heartfelt experiences was the Nursery school visit in Ismilla near Iringa. The school only has one building, that KC funded (which we painted on this trip). However, they are only now building a toilet block and the students still need to walk up to 7km to school from the age of 4.

Another intense experience was the Pentecostal church organisation which assists orphans and struggling families by providing an education, or paying for health insurance which is only 10,000 shillings (about £1 for a year of cover) and helping them and their families in other ways like extra tutoring and education in social skills.

Finally, Neema Crafts is another big project where we stayed over the 18 day trip. They give people with disabilities such as being deaf or having amputated limbs the ability to get a job at Neema or with the help of the sub charities within Neema complete other activities such as:

Brick for Brick - assisting workers to buy their own house which Neema builds (£2000 can buy a house)

Business startup - helping employees start up their own business

For all of these causes I will be raising money by swimming the Solent on the 4th of August. This is a 3-mile endurance sea swim which my grandad did when he was younger. This is why I chose this event to raise money for Tanzania, as both my Grampy and Tanzania mean so much to me.

Thank you for reading and please donate. In memory of Ralph Shand (Grampy)
