    Story

Meet the Poole's, Ross, Vicky and Evie. Evie is 12 years old, and its been an eventful 12 years for this little family. After Vicky falling pregnant with Evie, Ross was shipped out to Afghanistan and then stationed in Oxford at the time she was born (much mad dashing about). Into the world came beautiful baby Evie, Vicky and Ross knew there was a problem almost instantly, at a couple of weeks they would go to wind her and she would stand completely weight bearing on her legs. At six weeks she got a cold and started having full body convulsions, the local surgery said not worry it was colic. Trying to combat this they tried every colic remedy they could find, changed milk, took every suggestion people gave them. At nine and a half weeks she was so poorly she stopped eating and the doctor came out and called an ambulance. At the Leicester Royal she was diagnosed with reflux, and was told she would be discharged, fortunately the discharging consultant happened to be a neurologist covering paeds that weekend and saw her have a seizure and admitted her. From then on everything changed, she was diagnosed with West syndrome at 10 weeks. A few years later at 3 years old that diagnosis was changed to Lennox Gastaut.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is a severe condition characterized by recurrent seizures (epilepsy) that begin early in life. Affected individuals have multiple types of seizures, a particular pattern of brain activity (called slow spike-and-wave) measured by a test called an electroencephalogram (EEG), and impaired mental abilities.

In Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, epilepsy begins in early childhood, usually between ages 3 and 5. The most common seizure type is tonic seizures, which cause the muscles to stiffen (contract) uncontrollably. These seizures typically occur during sleep; they may also occur during wakefulness and cause sudden falls. Also common are atypical absence seizures, which cause a very brief partial or complete loss of consciousness. Additionally, many affected individuals have episodes called drop attacks, which cause sudden falls that can result in serious or life-threatening injuries. Drop attacks may be caused by sudden loss of muscle tone (described as atonic) or by abnormal muscle contraction (described as tonic). Other types of seizures have been reported less frequently in people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome often do not respond well to therapy with anti-epileptic medications.

During Evie's short life she's had multiple hospital stays and surgeries including many lumbar punctures, deep tissue biopsies, feeding tubes inserted multiple times, Watson wrap, vagal nerve stimulation surgery, tonsillectomy, countless admissions for respiratory infections. This family have been through the mill but they are amazing. Despite having so much to deal with they are active members of their community, helping, raising money for Rainbows where their daughter attends, helping other families, volunteering and fighting for their daughter.

During lockdown Evie has not been able to access school or Rainbows hydrotherapy pool and its had a significant impact on her physical health. She's lost all of her core muscle integrity causing the speeding up her scoliosis, which has intensified the rotation of the curve of her spine meaning her wheelchair is no longer fit for use and she cannot access her standing frame which helps with her respiratory function and hugely impacts her quality of life.

Having access to hydrotherapy is everything for Evie! I want to help this amazing family by enabling them to get a hot tub they can use all the time in their own garden. It needs to be in a structure as Evie cannot regulate her own body temperature, so I'm asking for support to help a fabulous family who work so hard to support everyone else and never ask for help. Thank you in advance for anything you can spare that helps to get Evie what she needs. xxx

So today I transfered 4300 pounds to the Poole's which will pay for the balance of Evie's hot tub. Thank you so much to every single person who has donated so far! We were also incredibly lucky to receive an award of 2.5k from the amazing Romy Trust and £250 from the Melton Building Society which have helped buy a really snazzy tub for Evie that will be safe for her to use for years to come. Thank you Lisa Bramall! We will still be need to house this tub to make it usable in all weathers and hope to continue to raise more for that purpose.xx

Woohoo 60% and there are also extras raising money, the lovely Annya and Katie running last man standing games and the cake raffle. A huge heartfelt thank you for everyone who has donated. I know Ross and Vicky are feeling massively overwhelmed by your kindness. Keep sharing, we are getting there! Here's a pic of Evie in Evan's tub getting her first little bit of stretch in 17 weeks, if only we had a hoist! Soon because of your generosity, she will be able to do this every day, in a safe, covered space with a hoist able to get her in safely!
