Story
Who are the Staffordshire and Shropshire Blood Bike Charity ?
Shropshire Staffordshire Cheshire Blood Bikes (SSBB) is a 100% volunteer organization which provides a free, urgent delivery service to the NHS, using motorcycle riders to collect and deliver urgent blood products between hospitals in our region.
It is not just blood, but platelets, meningitis fluid, bone marrow and a variety of test samples. They also regularly carry frozen donated breast milk for neo natal babies.
The advanced riders can negotiate busy city traffic and make their deliveries in a much quicker time than a car or van, which can make the difference between life and death.
Without the Blood Bikes, hospitals would have to use a taxi courier which can
cost up to £200 per time, therefore the Blood Bikes not only save lives, but vital NHS funds too. In fact it is estimated that SSBB saves the NHS in our area in excess of £100,000 per year.
The service runs 24hours 7 days a week, and with an average 10 deliveries a day, one day they may have the ride of your life.
So what are you doing?
On 24th January 2018, A group of 4 (Kevin Robbie, Mark Robbie, Paul Amos, Nick Fullman) will be embarking on a once in a lifetime trip to Cambodia. For one of its it’s a 40th Birthday present to himself and a 50th birthday present for another. ( I’ll let you work out who?) For the other 2 they are just daft enough to want to do it too. The aim is to complete an ultimate 1000km off road motorcycle adventure taking in everything that the Cambodia and the Cardamon Mountains can throw at us. River Crossings, Jungle, Remote Villages, Barbequed Paddy Rat etc. At a rate of approx. 130-170km per day. We will start out at Siem Reap and head south westerly over the Cardamom Mountains and eventually to the virgin sandy beaches of Sihanoukville. We will have a local guide and medic with us but as far as creature comforts goes… There will not be any. Accommodation will be in riverside bungalows at best and home stays with the local villagers.
Training for the event has so far meant a few laps around a local motocross track and promises to cut down on beer and burgers. However during Oct, Nov and December we will be taking on a few endurance events in the welsh forests to get us ready for the pain ahead.
Whilst this was originally meant to be an experience between the 4 of us, we though what a great opportunity to combine the risk laden event with the SSBB charity work and seek out sponsorship and support of 4 unfit and ill prepared middle aged blokes. The Goal for SSBB is £5000 which will go a long way in keeping a blood bike on the road for 1yr
In addition the tour will also be supporting a local charity called “M’Lop Tapang” where we will be taking toys and learning materials for the children

Being a volunteer rider for Staffordshire and Cheshire blood bikes it seemed the perfect opportunity to bring together a group of family and friends to embark on a once in a lifetime journey and at the same time supporting the Charity and promoting the services it offers.
