    Story

Kingsley Smith, my father, suffered a serious stroke in April 2017.

Having moved to rural Indonesia a couple of years before, the initial and ongoing treatment has proven to be lacking the structure and direction that might be expected. While he quickly regained most of his mental faculties, his physical condition has deteriorated with a continued paralysis of his left side and increasing weakness in his right side. He has therefore had zero independence since the stroke, being largely bed-bound throughout that time. You will know how much of a frustration that is for someone so active throughout his life and it has inevitably led to depression.

To add to the problem, Dad was dedicated to his work, planning to continue with his writing and advisory services indefinitely. Not only did his sanity depend on it, but he also planned his finances around the ability to earn.

As a family, we have provided as much support as we can, but the escalating medical costs and geographical distance has thwarted our efforts to the point where we have little more to offer.

While Dad is British, he has been overseas for 40 years. He would therefore not be automatically entitled to any treatment in the UK, and he would also need significant medical support in order to make the journey. Hong Kong and Australia are possibilities but, again, travel and costs are likely to be prohibitive.

After posting this on Facebook, there were lots of encouraging words and an enthusiasm for supporting Dad in finding the medical help to achieve greater progress in his recovery.

With great respect and humility, your support would be hugely appreciated.

As one of Kingsley's 3 sons, we have worked hard to provide the support needed, financially, emotionally and practically. Unfortunately, the ongoing needs have made it impossible to continue this without further support. The initial aim is to get Dad some independence
