    Story

This is a disaster that so few people know about. On 7-Jun-17, savage fires raged through the magnificent hills and plantations in and around the beautiful coastal town of Knysna. The horror of the event was primarily reported on social media as the town was evacuated while homes and other buildings burnt down.

Firefighters fought as hard as they could, but it was impossible to contain the spread of the fire given the strength of the winds at the time. I would like to start by thanking all the emergency services for your valiant effort.

According to a recent report (15-Jun-17), 485 houses and 150 informal structures were destroyed. EVERYONE in the area knows somebody who has lost everything.

Some homes were so badly burnt, that it is difficult to figure out where they once stood. The fire left nothing to be salvaged. For many, even the ash and charcoal that lingered has since been blown away and only the foundations remain.

It is worth highlighting that South Africa does not operate like many first world countries. The government is not going to swoop in and rescue all these people. This is Africa. The solution to this disaster falls to the community, their family and the charity of their friends to help in whichever way they can.

So much needed: shelter, blankets (it is winter), clothes, food, medical assistance, etc.

I have never asked for help like this before, but today I humbly seek your assistance. If you feel that you would like to help, the Knysna community would be forever grateful.

I am working with the Rotary Club of Knysna to apply these funds directly to those in greatest need. The focus is on buying building materials to assist with the reconstruction of dwellings in informal settlements.

100% of all funds received by Rotary go to identified priorities. No admin or any other fees are deducted.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support.

Given where I'm literally sitting, this is the least I can do. Once again wish it could be more. I hope the community at your home in Knysna continues to rally and recover.

Thank you Charlie Tedeski - you are amazing! Charlie asked all his friends to donate to the fire victims in Knysna instead of receiving gifts for his 9th birthday! Wow!! You are inspiring!!
