Rebecca has owned Roxy for 3 years and they have come such a long way together in that time. When she first came along due to the awful winter Roxy suffered from bad foot abcesses. A year later Roxy pulled a front tendon through a field accident.. Another year on and Roxy suffered a blackthorn injury. To date Roxy has had 9 months box rest & 2 operations. A purely accident prone mare!
However Rebecca did not give up, and in the last year I have seen these 2 become quite a team and they have an inseparable bond, they have both come on in literally leaps and bounds.
Roxy and Rebecca really enjoy their endurance rides together and I have had the pleasure of being part of it.
Last Sunday whilst on a ride Roxy had a fall and injured her hock and stifle. Luckily the vet on site was able to give enough pain relief to enable us to load her in the box to get us home. To make a bad day worse, when we got back to the yard and were unloading Roxy she stumbled on her bad leg and caught her foot on the corner of the ramp and cut her self. We cleaned it and dressed it and for a few days she seemed to making a recovery.
Yesterday we arrived at the yard to find Roxy struggling to put weight on the cut leg and called the vet.
It turns out she has an infected tendon sheath and after taking a sample it has been confirmed that Roxy's infection is very serious.
Although Roxy is insured not all the cost may be be covered as it will cost between £1500 and £5000 and this doesn't cover any after care once she returns home and box rest may last as long as 12 months.
Rebecca is a full time nursing student and is living on a shoestring budget.
She loves Roxy and so do I, I just want to give her the best chance of recovery that I can because I am so proud to see them work together.
Any help that you can give will go a long way in aiding what I hope will be a full recovery.
