    Story

Four-and-a-half years of armed conflict in Syria has contributed to more than 250,000 deaths. That’s equivalent to the entire population of Canterbury - five times over! Nearly 12 million people have had to flee their homes so that they might not add to that number.
Sadly, this has led to a humanitarian crisis meaning that millions do not have access to even the most basic of human needs such as food, water, shelter, and education. Not to mention the psychological distress caused. Research shows the devastating legacy of the crisis, including long-term mental health issues for those who have fled their homes.

We’re used to hearing about it in the news, on the television, on social media, and when we hear about it I think it’s quite natural to feel shocked at first, but then to switch off from our emotions and do nothing about it – I know I do! Our normality in the UK is so far removed from the tragedies that are going on overseas that it can be difficult to really relate. Maybe it seems that there is so little that we can do, we feel helpless to make a difference.

My wife Lydia and I have decided that we would like to try to offer ourselves in a way which might inspire all of you to give a little in support of some great causes.

We will be walking 120 miles, over 5 days, from Canterbury to Ely in aid of those displaced by war in Syria and would love for you all to sponsor us. We both grew up in East Anglia, so we think of the journey as us walking home in aid of those who are not able to.

The charities we'll be supporting are connected with our own sensitivities. The first is the Refugee Therapy Centre whose purpose is to help refugees to deal with their psychological difficulties.
The second is called A Village in Syria; who are dedicated to supporting those who have been internally displaced by providing sanitation, healthcare, education, food, water, and community development opportunities.

We are so grateful for your support. No amount is too small.
