    Story

I work at a Secondary School in Basildon, we are the fifth poorest school in the county and the tenth poorest school in the South East of England.

Ofsted recently graded us as a Good School with Student Well-being graded Outstanding.

Our students are the focus of everything we do, with the statistics above it's not surprising that we have almost 100 identified Young Carers on role and growing.

AFFC are our chosen Young Carers charity who provide our students with additional support.

    What is a Young Carer?

The term Young Carer applies to anyone between the age of eight to eighteen whose life is in some way restricted because of the need to take responsibility for the care of a person on a regular basis.

What might a young carer do?

Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.

Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.

Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed.

Personal care, such as helping someone dress.

Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.

    Helping to give medicine.

    Helping someone communicate.

    Looking after brothers and sisters

Impacts of being a Young Carer

Being a young carer can have a big impact on the things that are important growing up.

It can affect a young person’s health, social life and self-confidence.

Many young carers struggle to juggle their education and caring which can cause pressure and stress.

1 in 20 miss school because of their caring role.

But young people can learn lots of useful skills by being a young carer.

There are approximately 700,000 Young Carers in the UK. They may be the main carer, or provide partial care for an adult or sibling.

Action for Family Carers Basildon are a charity who provide school link workers to come into Basildon schools and support those children who have been identified as Young Carers

    Their School Service can provide;

One-to-one support sessions, giving Young Carers the opportunity to talk confidentially to somebody who understands.

Practical support such as providing support in meetings with teachers to explain why, for example, they have fallen behind with their homework.

Informal drop-in groups where Young Carers can meet others in the same situation and access information and advice.

Information on how to access Respite Clubs in the local area where Young Carers can meet other young people in the same situation.

Help to raise awareness of Young Carers to both staff and students through PSHRE lessons, assemblies and Teacher Training
