As many of you already know, I have a rare genetic disorder called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. EDS is a very disabling, complex and painful condition, as it causes the body’s collagen to be stretchy and fragile. I live in constant chronic pain, spend a lot of time in hospital, depend on round the clock care and the use of a wheelchair. This is due to the fact my joints dislocate; my internal organs don’t function properly; I am unable to regulate my heart rate, blood pressure & bodily temperatures; as well as having a weak immune system, breathing difficulties and severe allergies.

Since being diagnosed with EDS my life has been turned upside down. Every day is different as my symptoms can drastically change at any time, with little warning. Sadly, this means I am unable to be left alone or go out independently in case of an emergency; which is mentally and physically frustrating for both myself and my carers.

However, this is going to change when I finally receive an assistance dog who can retrieve medications, the phone, my crutches or dropped objects; open and close doors; pull me up when I fall and call for help. Collectively these tasks will allow my carers to leave me, whilst feeling reassured that the dog can keep me safe. Obviously, a huge part of having a dog is ensuring they get plenty of exercise, but my wheelchair does not work off road and EDS makes it difficult for me to self-propel. All of which isn’t practical when working with an assistance dog and limits where I can walk them. Therefore, I am hoping to raise enough money so that I can purchase a power assisted wheelchair attachment called Firefly, as well as off roading wheels that will allow me to independently take my dog for a walk.
