Story
I'm a student paramedic wishing to volunteer my services in a country that for, economic and cultural reasons, does not provide healthcare and medical assistance to it's population in the same way that the NHS does. I chose Cambodia because although there has been investment in the country's healthcare system, many of the people live in poverty and suffer from conditions rarely seen in the UK, for example, malnutrition, dengue fever, dysentry, haemorrhagic fever and tuberculosis.
One of the hardest things I know I will have to deal with is facing practices that are unacceptable in our country (UK), such as people desperate for medical help and lifesaving treatment but not having the money to pay.
I am keen to help in any way I can and learn valuable lessons in understanding another culture and healthcare system, lessons which I can employ in the UK to help me be a better paramedic.
I need to raise money to help with my travel and accommodation so any contribution, no matter how small, would be gratefully received. In return, I will post pictures and write a blog of all my experiences and adventures.
Thank you all.
Layla
