We are raising funds to support a 125 year old panchayat union public school (government school) in our native village, North Thathamangalam in Tamilnadu, India. To give a brief overview, in 2013 the school had only 23 students in class 1 to 5 with 8 student in class 5 and 7 in class 4. This number was expected to drop to 10 in 2015 due to parents desire for English medium and non-availability of English medium in the school. Private schools in and around the areas made education as a profitable business.To make a change, the Learn Trust have managed to save the school by seeking permission from the Tamilnadu government to run an English medium. As a result of the extraordinary efforts, the student population now rose to 102, more than ten folds more than the predicted number for 2017. Learn Trust has appointed additional teacher, provided computer and play-learning toys to raise the education standards at its own expense.

The school provides Free Education in English and Tamil medium, Free meals and transportation for the students at a very minimal cost operated by the Learn. As a result of excellent teaching, now the locals from the villages nearby are choosing this government school over the expensive private schools. It is important to mention that more than 90% of the parents of the school kids are farmers, daily wages, building workers and or in economically deprived status. Most of the students in our school are first generation school goers.

For the past 3 years, the Learn Trust operated a van exclusively in a charitable motto to bring and take the students to and from the school every day. As the student’s numbers rose, there is a need to buy a bigger van to accommodate them and offer the van service at a minimal cost. Without a proper transport, the parents are bit hesitant to send their kids to this remote village. Hence, buying an additional/bigger van is vital to keep the school alive.
