Story
Hay on Wye Swimming pool used to be run by Powys County Council and they decided to shut down this valuable asset. Hay school PTFA initially took over the running of the pool but last year this lease was taken over by members of the local community and registered as a charity under the name of Friends of Hay Swimming Pool.
This wonderful pool is run and managed by a small group of volunteers, who understand how important for our small community to have this amazing facility locally. Children from 3 local schools use it regularly to enable children to develop the important life skill of swimming. Without this pool locally, our children would have a 32 miles round trip to the nearest public swimming pool.
Although the pool is used mainly by children during term time for lessons, it is available for private hire on weekends and school holidays. The pool is hugely successful with around 400 people using it on a weekly basis.
The pool is situated in a very old building and is need of repairs and maintenance. While we can fund the smaller projects from money raised, we are desperate for a new lining for the bottom of the pool. It is currently in a dire state and needs replacing. The quotes we have received are around £15,000. We are currently applying for some funding, but we are unsure when or even if we will be successful in our bids.
If we cannot replace the lining, we will have to shut the pool down and we absolutely do not want to do that. Hay swimming pool is an important resource for the whole community of Hay on Wye and surrounding areas from babies to the elderly and so we need your help!
