    Story

In June I will be spending some time with an initiative called 'Home For a Day', on Lesvos, Greece. Home For a Day is the creation of Nikos and Katerina, a couple who aim to feed as many refugees from the Moria Refugee Camp with a home cooked meal as possible.

Originally a temporary solution after the unprecedented influx of refugees to Lesvos in 2015, the Moria camp was designed to accommodate 2000 people. However, at present, Moria houses over 5000 people. These people have fled war zones in Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq; crossed the 10km channel from Turkey in terrifying conditions; and now wait in squalid conditions for their asylum applications to be granted. With all of these people, Lesvos is stretched to its capacity, and much of the help that refugees in the Moria camp receive comes from small, local organisations such as Home For a Day.

Everyday, Nikos and Katerina collect people from the Moria camp and bring them to their restaurant to eat freshly cooked meals in a safe and comfortable space. They also open up their doors to provide a caring and nurturing environment for unaccompanied children, who endure the conditions of the camp without supervision and support. Home For a Day host regular music groups for people in the camp to attend, as well as distributing practical and necessary supplies to refugees.

During my time with ‘Home for a Day’’ I will be helping in the restaurant, distributing supplies, and driving people to and from Moria camp. I feel so fortunate to be able donate my time to such a vital cause, but I would also like to donate as much money as possible. Since I will be coming from Myanmar, I will have limited luggage space, and won’t be able to donate as many of the essential material items as I would like. This makes the financial donation even more important! So if you can spare any money to donate to this awesome cause, please, please do!
