£599raised of £1,000 target by 34 supporters

Weʼve raised £599 to enable a computer cafe to continue as funding expires in Sept - this cafe is supporting older people living with isolation and loneliness

    Bristol, United Kingdom
Funded on Saturday, 11th November 2017

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

In 2015/16 a group of older people in the community worked with a Bristol University Research Associate and engaged with members of the community in BS3 – Greater Bedminster. Researchers openly discussed loneliness and isolation with older people, at flu clinics, at cafes, at GP surgeries, in the street. The informal talks were to engage people and understand what the community could do to help reduce isolation and loneliness.

One of the findings was that technology was daunting to many older people and although some wanted to learn about mobile phones, tablets and laptops, they did not want to attend a class / go on a course.

Members of the original research group successfully applied for a Big Lottery grant; which a local charity holds and manages on their behalf . The application has enabled a new group to be formed – LILAC – Local Isolation and Loneliness Action Committee. LILAC recruited a Community Development Worker and together a ‘Tech & Talk’ project was formed.

The project allows people 50 years old, plus to come to a safe environment (2 local cafes in BS3), fortnightly to ask questions about tech. The approach is very much participant led and volunteers support LILAC and the Community Development Worker. Volunteers include IT students from a local sixth form college and is a fantastic inter-generational project.

Funding expires in September 2017 and this wonderful project potentially will not be able to continue. £1000 will allow the sessions to run until December 2017 by which time some grants that have been applied for may be realised.

The sessions are being recognized by local charities and people / carers accompany vulnerable members of the community that they are supporting to these sessions. Sometimes the volunteers are the only people that attendees see all week - we can not let this come to an end after just 1 year. It was wanted by the community and is being delivered by the community. Please help!

A very worthwhile project that deserves to continue, thanks for letting me be involved in a small way earlier this year!
