Globally there are estimated to be 45.8 million people living in modern day slavery.
That’s enough to fill Wembley stadium over 500 times. There are estimated to be between 10,000- 13,000 people in slavery in the UK - recently the NCA said that this number is the tip of the iceberg. These people are enslaved in all different walks of life. In the UK they are in our car washes, our nail bars, working on our farms, working as waiters, cleaners, and pretty much anywhere else you can imagine. The NCA report also estimates that they are in every town and city in the country. Globally, we’re connected to them through the things we buy and the decisions we make. Just buying that cheap t-shirt, the wrong kind of chocolate or even that nice, shiny electronic device you’re reading this on, can cause people to live in mod- ern day slavery.
Luckily, because we’re so connected to modern slavery, we can do something about it. Just being aware of our connections and making tiny changes to our everyday decisions could give slavery an almighty kick in the shin and free people all around the world. There are loads of great organisations that tell us what little changes can help or what to do if we expect someone is enslaved but not enough people know about them, or the issue at all. That’s why As Seen From The Sidecar is organising a rally from London to Paris to raise aware- ness of modern day slavery and in particular Unseen, who run the Modern Slavery Helpline in the UK.
At the same time we'll be raising funds for As Seen From The Sidecar’s wider awareness raising expedition that will see Matt Bishop and Reece Gilkes circumnavigate the globe on a scooter with a sidecar on an Official Guinness World Record attempt. The two man team will be braving some of the world’s most inhospitable environments, on the most inappropriate mode of transport imaginable, to visit small NGOs and charities all around the world that are fighting modern day slavery and other human rights abuses. They’re doing it to raise awareness of the issue and show just how close to home these issues are. The money raised through As Seen From The Sidecar will go towards the expedition and raising awareness of modern day slavery, and directly to the organisations they visit.
Please help us fight modern day slavery and donate to the cause or better still join us on this ridiculous but important statement against modern day slavery on the 21st of October.
