    Story

On behalf of the Long Ashton Churchyard and Memorial Trust, thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

Sadly two World Wars and various other conflicts in the 21st Century were needed to defend the freedom and liberty of our country. Our Trust was formed in 2019 in order to raise funds to design and build a war memorial, in honour of 104 parishioners who have lost their lives in the service of their country since 1914.

Many of the local residents involved in the various conflicts went to Northleaze School and after looking at various sites a suitable location was chosen opposite the school at the corner of Long Ashton Road and Theynes Croft which has extensive views of the surrounding countryside which provides an ideal site for the New Memorial.

The Memorial is a modern design but using traditional materials of granite and stone and intended for every one to use whether for rest, remembrance or contemplation.

The design of the actual Memorial is based on the principle of 3 different height standing stones, which are to represent the Men, Women and Children who have died in the conflicts during and since WW1 and the Memorial has been located in a circular Courtyard.

The location of the Memorial in the Courtyard still allows a view of the Memorial from Long Ashton Road but provides more sheltered areas at the rear, allowing benches and wheel chair spaces for peaceful contemplation. This space also opens to a Garden for Contemplation to provide further seating with Valley views.

We have completed construction, with the retaining walls being built from stone salvaged from the old Royal British Legion Building. The engraved Memorial Stones with the Dedication were Unveiling on 12th April, 2021, 80 years to the day that Mill Cottages were bombed, killing the Wilson Family by H M Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mrs Anne Maw.

Trust are still working on the project to provide what we consider is an important contribution to both the Village and Residents of Long Ashton, and to make sure that the sacrifice of those listed on the Memorial are remembered by future generations.

Your donations are crucial in order to make sure this memorial is maintained for the future.. Many thanks again, your support is very much appreciated.
