Story
Longwill School for Deaf Children has recently opened its new school library. Pupils between the ages of 3 and 11 years are able to use it whenever they wish, learning how to use a library effectively as well as being able to borrow books on a regular basis. The library is kept neat, tidy and well organised by a group of year 5 library monitors who meet each week, in their lunch hour, to keep all the books in order!
We need to enlarge our library stock so that pupils can develop a love of reading, being inspired by high quality children's literature as well as informed by visually appealing information books.
All children need to be inspired to read but this is all the more important for Deaf children, who often find reading a struggle and whose reading attainment rates at a national level fall well short of their hearing peers'. Deafness is not a learning disability, so this should not be the case.
