    Story

This is Khalil with his beloved cat Lolo. He's a young man like many others with talents, hoping for his chance in life; and his school results were good. But he lives in the Gaza Strip, one of the poorest and most overcrowded areas of the world, a small strip of land surrounded by an Israeli barrier, and 1.9 million people trapped inside with almost no possibility of leaving. And to make it worse, he suffers from beta thalassaemia major, an inherited blood disease. He is one of a close family of seven whose hardworking parents want the best for him, he is very talented, especially with computers, but he can't work and needs to stay in hospital for days and weeks at a time. He needs regular blood transfusions and treatments to reduce the iron build-up in his body; recently his condition has been getting worse with frequent haemorrhages. On the 14th of May, the day before his birthday, he had to be rushed back to hospital. Even when he does get a chance to rest at home with his parents and siblings, he feels weak and tired.

And yet there is hope: the specialist treatment he needs would be available in the Palestinian Maqassed hospital in occupied East Jerusalem. At present there seems to be no chance that the Israeli government would allow him access there, however ill he is, as a 27-year-old man living in Gaza. We're continuing to press his case, in the hope that he might travel to Jerusalem and have the treatment. Although the blood transfusions he has in Gaza are free, because his family and friends donate blood to the Gaza hospitals, the drugs for the life-threatening heart, liver and bone problems which accompany long-term thalassaemia, are difficult and sometimes impossible to obtain; they have to be brought from Egypt and cost a lot of money. He deserves this treatment and the chance to live a better life. We ask you to help us to give them to him.

      Update from the Page owner

Dear Friends, Many thanks to you all for your wonderful support. It has really made all the difference! Your generous gifts raised £880; and with this money we have managed to buy the very expensive drugs which Khalil had to have to continue his life-saving treatment. So that is brilliant! Khalil didn't feel like going out with the family to enjoy the Eid nightlife on the beach yesterday; but a few of his cousins his age came to his house, and next morning family found them all sleeping soundly together on the sofa after celebrating together.

The good news is that the appeal for Khalil is going REALLY WELL: we are making more progress with medical specialists, and we've raised an incredible £590 in just a few days thanks to your generosity. BUT we need to meet some immediate expenses: and it would be really helpful if we could give our fund that extra push to reach £700 by May 30th. Can we ask you, if at all possible, to find friends who haven't helped so far to raise that much more? Many thanks. :-)

Saturday afternoon. The response to this appeal has been so impressive - though it is a very deserving cause. Some more news: 1. We've found a specialist doctor who's ready to do a phone consultation on Khalid's case on Sunday. 2. We've already sent the money we've received so far to the pharmacy; and the first batch of medicine will arrive from Egypt in the next few days : 3. Khalil and his family are really cheered by everyone's response to the appeal; and grateful. Gazans are used to being forgotten by the outside world. Not here!

We've raised £210 of the £1500 we're asking for for Khalil's expensive drugs - in 9 hours! THIS IS AMAZING! Keep it up, people. It isn't easy to find reasons for hope if you're a seriously ill Palestinian in Gaza; but you're doing it, and it's so impressive. Thankyou Luke, Liz, Nancy and Khalil's family and friends 🙂🙂
