Story

We've been working to improve population health in Malawi for 30 years. We have previously worked on leprosy, tuberculosis and HIV but Malawi is now experiencing a large and growing burden of infectious and "non-communicable" diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes and cancers.

While infectious diseases remain common and cause a lot of illness and premature death, particularly in young children, we’ve also found that adults, even in middle age are at high risk of developing chronic debilitating conditions including hypertension and diabetes. To understand better these diseases in Malawi, we are leading research into preventative interventions and detailed studies of the impact of inadequate (mal/under-) nutrition in early childhood and unhealthy diet and lifestyle choices in adulthood.

We have a committed team of researchers, staff and health care workers developing ideas, collecting data and working on solutions for the major health problems of the 21st century in low-income countries in Africa, like Malawi. We have two big community studies; in rural Karonga district, where most people survive by growing their own food for their families or fishing, and in urban Lilongwe, where rural migrants are seeking employment to support their families alongside longer urban residents.

We are a non-profit, academic organisation. We rely on funding from international global health research donors to support our work but you can support us too! Your gift will be used in Malawi to help us with our community work, including direct health service provision, capacity building of local researchers and supporting our staff to work on new ideas for locally relevant solutions to important health problems.
