Story
50 water filters for 50 affected families
Human beings are able to live without safe, drinking water for up to five days. In Mexican boroughs and municipalities such as Iztapalapa, Tláhuac, Xochimilco, San Gregorio, and Jojutla, tons of families have been, for weeks, without access to drinking water because of the deadly earthquake that rocked Mexico City and nearby states on September 19. The earthquake, which killed scores and toppled buildings, has left a devastating and severe damage.
Yecolti is an Mexican nonprofit organization that seeks to promote human development by helping to improve the quality of life. This project consists of the distribution of a water filter that contains a purifying system: transforming contaminated water to clean and drinkable, making it an inexhaustible resource. We are focusing on the Tláhuac, Iztapalapa, Jojutla and Xochimilco neighborhoods.
Yecolti is always concerned for the wellbeing of society, and believes that, when united, we are able to accomplish so much more. This project is focused on giving back to those families suffering from this catastrophe the most basic of necessities: safe, drinking water. But we also believe that the best way to help is providing people with tools to move forward, make progress, and get through these difficult times. Our idea is to donate 50 drinking water filters to 50 affected families along with a complete, proper training so that the aid and support becomes permanent. The purification system that will be donated is an alternative that allows us to provide clean drinking water for everyone, eliminating up to 99.99% of the pathogens living in the water. It purifies more than 10,000 liters of drinking water and can purify up to 50,000, depending on the quality of the water to be filtered.
To achieve this goal we must collect 70 USD per family, resulting in a total of 3,500 USD. This money will be used for the purchase of the water filters, delivery, and training given to the 50 families, along with all the logistics that the project requires. The 50 families will be contacted directly from us and through volunteers who helped after the earthquake.
Yecolti means to share in náhuatl, and was born precisely out of the desire to build a community based on collective growth. Those affected by the earthquake need our help and support, and we believe that through this project, all together, we can give back to these families the most basic and most important human necessity. The things we build are the things that linger.
