Story
The only things I knew I always wanted were to become a doctor and travel the world. I love that I can expand my medical knowledge whilst helping people at the same time. I have worked in many hospitals to get more of a perspective of the medical environment. Obviously a good doctor is somebody who is very intelligent but there is so much more than being textbook smart and being able to work out ridiculously hard maths equations. I know that if I myself went into the doctors or a hospital about an illness, I would want the doctor to be compassionate and empathize with me, rather than just being another name to be ticked off the list. Over Christmas I went over to Gambia in West Africa to do voluntary work. During my time in Africa I did lots of things, these include: working at the schools, reading to the children, playing games, and helping them with reading and writing. I worked at the medical center and I visited the compounds doing some lectures on hygiene and prevention of diseases. I also did an English class at the women's garden - in Africa, many women are illiterate. I have also wrote a report which will hopefully follow up to a training center being funded and built for the women to go to. I volunteered at a hospital where I worked on the labour ward where I assisted with the deliveries of babies. Africa was an amazing experience. Now I want the opportunity to travel to other countries to help those in need. I am fundraising to go over to Thailand with a program called GapMedics to work with talented doctors in which will give me the opportunity to pursue my passion for medicine, immerse myself in the culture, and help people in need. I will be spending approximately 23 hours a week volunteering in the hospital. I want to learn even more medicine, witness some more fantastic procedures such as surgeries, assist in more baby deliveries and to be a massive cliche, make a difference to the patients lives! No amount is too small x x x
