Story
No child should be subjected to growing up orphaned and isolated from society as a result of disease, infection or poverty which could be prevented.
Personally, I have been lucky enough to experience a privileged childhood, surrounded by a supportive family, healthcare readily available to me should I need it, and the opportunity for an amazing education. I feel very strongly that every child should have the right to these three things by birth… Sadly, I know that this is not the case for many.
In rural, western Kenya; poverty, insufficient or non-existent healthcare, a lacking education system and a high level of HIV, results in many young orphans being sucked into a lonely, destructive cycle – Stuck in a ruck which without help, is almost impossible to escape from.
Luckily, The Nasio Trust charity has recognised this and is working tirelessly to transform the lives of these vulnerable children. Currently focusing their work in the communities of Mumias and Musanda, their aim is to sustainably break the cycle of poverty by providing education, improving the health of the community whilst simultaneously promoting and aiding the development of commerce. They now run 2 early childhood development centres which provide a daily meal, education and medical care to around 400 children. Without the support of the Nasio Trust, the reality for these children would either be death, or incredibly uncertain and unstable futures with little prospect of an education or employment. Through the care and education provided at the centres, the children have an opportunity to change the course of their lives and fulfil their potential; building a future for their communities.
It is for these reasons and many more, that I feel so strongly about supporting this charity. In July this year, along with 7 other Year 12 students, I will be spending 2 weeks in western Kenya, working alongside the charity - seeing first-hand the impact this amazing charity is having!
