    Story

Raymond 'Ray' Gilmour was a former British Agent who had been living under a new identity for the past 30 years. He was found dead at his flat in Kent.

Ray's friend and fellow agent, Martin McGartland, said: "It is disgraceful that Ray died in these circumstances. He spent years begging MI5 for financial and psychological help. Instead, they turned their back on him. He was a broken man, a wreck of a human being, and they left him to die in the gutter. As far as I'm concerned, the security services have Ray's blood on their hands. They had plenty of opportunities to save him but they turned their back on him. He gave his all to them to help defeat the IRA but, when they had no use for him, they discarded him. He was treated like a third-class citizen."

IRA victims' campaigner Willie Frazer said, "It was heartbreaking to read that he had such an isolated and poverty-stricken existence in his final years. I want him to have the dignity in death that he was denied in the latter part of his life. It's the least we can do for him.
It would be disgraceful if Raymond Gilmour was given a pauper's funeral. He saved many lives in Northern Ireland. He put his own life on the line in the fight against the IRA. We owe him a debt of gratitude."

We do not know what the cost of a proper burial, funeral would be but it would be fitting if we could raise enough to be able to give Ray a proper funeral and pay for a headstone. Please help if you can, spread the word, ask your friends, their friends to share on facebook, twitter ... pages.

Thank you in advance for reading and for any donations given on behalf of Ray, who was taken far too soon aged just 55, may he rest in peace.

Why Raymond Gilmour's violent life and pitiful death are but a microcosm of our murky past The motivation to turn informer was never as straightforward as it might suit us to think, writes Gail Walker http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/opinion/columnists/gail-walker/why-raymond-gilmours-violent-life-and-pitiful-death-are-but-a-microcosm-of-our-murky-past-35177014.html
