Tenterden and the surrounding area has an ageing population, with this comes a number of conditions, one of which is dementia. My mother was diagnosed with this cruel disease a few years ago and I have seen her deteriorate from a clever, confident woman to a confused almost child like old lady. I was struggling with who to talk to and where to turn for guidance and advice, until I heard about The Memory Cafe at the Kent and East Sussex Railway at the bottom of Station Road, Tenterden. It's somewhere to take dementia sufferers, have a coffee or tea and a slice of cake, they can chat to one another and the relations and carers can exchange information and ideas to help them through this difficult journey. Trips and events are organised and guest speakers are invited in to share important information about services that may benefit sufferers and carers. The Tenterden Dementia Friendly Community is an umbrella organisation that brings together the various groups in the area that help the elderly, this has contributed to a culture of joined up thinking, ensuring these groups work together to best help those they serve. I've decided to raise awareness and funds to show my appreciation and admiration for TDFC with the hope that it will help them in some way.
