What is World Challenge?

World Challenge builds the life skills young people need to live a life of courage, kindness and adventure. The expedition participants complete local projects in one of 5 areas;

Education

Sustainable livelihoods

Conservation

Water, health and sanitation

Welfare and housing.

Why do I want to participate in a World Challenge?

Since the age of 10 I have been going away to camps with organisations such as Scouts and Scripture Union. The part of these experiences I like the most is challenging myself during activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, high ropes, gorge walking and canoeing.

As a family we are part of a charity called Canine Partners and we are currently looking after our 4th puppy who will hopefully become an assistance dog. This has taught me that helping others is an important part of life and that as a useful member of society I have a duty to make a difference where possible.

World Challenge brings these two things together. It will be a massive challenge travelling somewhere so far away from home with different food, culture and very different wildlife. I will be spending 4 days trekking through the jungle and this is certainly not going to be easy. I will also be participating in a community engagement project which we will decide on after meeting local people and hearing what challenges they face. This could be working to improve a building such as a school or health centre or it could be working to improve a water supply.

Throughout the trip we have minimal help from the adults in our party as we have to budget ourselves, organise accommodation, buy food and travel inside the country. This will be a challenge in itself!

It's not all hard work

I will also be fortunate enough to spend time in Hanoi at the beginning of the trip and at the end we have 2 days in Halong Bay to snorkel, go on a boat trip and relax.
