    Story

Many children at Rock River Primary School are at a great disadvantage because their parents are struggling financially and cannot afford to send them to school regularly. There are some children who cannot read.

In their final year at primary school, the children sit an exam which determines their placement at a secondary school. If they perform badly, these children could end up in a school which is very far away. This means that they have to get up as early as 4am every morning to be able to get to their secondary school on time. To make matters worse, the children only attend regularly if their parents can pay the school fees and if they can also come up with the bus fare and lunch money. For some children, attendance could be as low as two days per week.

As someone who had a father who was totally illiterate, I truly appreciate the importance of a good education. I am committed to helping needy children at Rock River Primary School because my belief is that these children should not be deprived of a good education just because they are poor. I ran a Summer School last year for over 40 children. There, they got the chance to improve their skills in English and Maths.

I am running the Summer School again this year so that more children, especially those in their final year, can be helped. The impact of the catch-up lessons will last way past two weeks and could determine whether a child goes to a secondary school two days per week or seven days per week, whether the child gets up at 4am every day or at 6am to go to a secondary school which is close.

All money donated will go directly to the Summer School. Lunch and a snack at break-time will be provided for the children. Surplus funds will be used to buy essential school supplies which will give them a positive start to the new school year.

A donation of £10 can buy lunch and a snack for a child for one week.

Your support means a lot. Thank you for getting involved.

Many decades ago I was a pupil at Rock River Primary School, which is situated in a remote but very beautiful part of Jamaica. I have now retired from my job as a teacher in England and I want to help children who now go to the same primary school as I did.
