    Story

On the 4th January 2018 the Kelpie cafe at Banff Castle was broken into. The painting 'The Hanging of McPherson' by John Stewart was extensively damaged.

The painting tells the story of freebooter James McPherson who was hung in 1700 in Banff. The Artist Mr Stewart in 1973 depicted many locals and well known political characters of the day from Banff and Macduff. The painting measures approximately 15 feet by 5 feet and hangs in the Kelpie Cafe Banff Castle, a local community project for people with disabilities. The painting has a strong connection to the Banff and Macduff area and represents local community art and culture.

We wish to restore the painting to its full glory and make good the damage this will result in having to take down the painting from the wall, store and preserve damaged areas before repairing damage and rehanging.

UPDATE! Due to the overwhelming response from supporters and local businesses offering additional support, work has now begun on restoring the painting. The original artist, John Stewart has very kindly offered to assist in the restoration which means that we no longer have to consider a restoration company. This has greatly reduced the cost and we will be closing the Justgiving page very soon. A huge thank you to everyone for their support and positive comments. The painting will be back in The Kelpie Cafe very soon.

Mr Stewart was my Art Teacher many years ago - I am disgusted at this insult to his masterpiece.
