    Story

    Hi everyone!

My name is Melanie and I am currently in my second year at Teesside University studying Adult Nursing. I have recently been chosen as one of 16 students to be given a once in a lifetime opportunity to volunteer in a hospital in Cambodia for 2 weeks with the charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia. The charity sends student nurses over to a hospital in Battambang to observe how their healthcare system works, and also participate in the education and training of healthcare professionals.

Here is some information about the history of Cambodia and why we are travelling:

On April 17, 1975, Pol Pot led the Communist forces of the Khmer Rouge into the Cambodian capital city of Phnom Penh, beginning a vicious genocidal four-year regime in which an estimated two million Cambodians lost their lives. All intellectuals and educated people were eliminated, the health care system was entirely destroyed. It is estimated that at the end of the regime only ten doctors survived.

Since this time Cambodia has strove to develop and improve healthcare provision for the populous. The 1980's saw a period of reconstruction and rehabilitation with a special effort on training a new generation of health professionals. Transform Healthcare Cambodia supports this endeavour.

Transform Healthcare Cambodia was established to relieve sickness and to promote and protect good health for the benefit of the public, in particular but not exclusively within the Battambang Province through the provision of training to health care workers, education on the prevention of diseases and hygiene, the provision of equipment and financial support for such other health care related services as resources permit.

This trip is completely self-funded, so I have set up this funding page to help with costs, anything you can give no matter how small is very much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!
